In a book about the making of 2001, a launcher for the Orion Clipper was mentioned. It was never shown in the movie, of course, but I always wondered what the configuration would look like. I did this as an extension of current technology, rather than something from the 2001 universe. It started with the Orion, which I modified and re-surfaced in a more "shuttle-like' appearance. I created the "Prometheus" launch vehicle, then perched the assembly onto a modified launch pad from Ivor (The Great).
Had hoped to get a copy of Matt's Orion III
...
Lovely pic!
Nice image.
Jack, let me know if you want it. I've got it here somewhere.
Regards
M.
Matt has an Orion as well? Ooooh, I'd like to see that. I've been working on my own version, and the rocket cowling and exhaust are especially difficult for me.
FYI: the Orion is my favorite space craft design of all time from my favorite movie of all time. I want to do it justice.
Arrghh...'Tis a beauty!
Lovely render..,..still can't believe the pad is 6 years old though...you've got to appreciate that that was high poly at the time! (Built on a P233 I seem to remember). Looks good though...you've captured some atmoshpere there!
Cheers
Ivor
Well it was perfect for my needs, Ivor -- thanks for the resource and the kind words.
Here's another angle of the scene from a ground angle.
That's fantastic.
The composition and lighting work so nicely in both.
I don't know but an FP might just be in order on one of these...
The second shot is also beautiful. I like how the launch vehicle is flattened out like a wing rather than a big tank.
__________________the gantry seems to be a bit err...disassociated in the second pic (doesn't meet yp with the launch pad). Look great though!
Cheers
IvorI did this quite some time ago and worked on it for a long time and I never noticed the darn disembodied gantry! I had to move things around quite a bit to accommodate the new vehicle and forgot about it, I guess. Forest for the trees. Thanks for the heads-up, Ivor. Here's the corrected version. The launch tower seems to me to be a little sharp on the edges
And where's the Old Pan Am Logo

Looks goodSince PanAm went bankrupt before 2001, you should consider this a shift in the timeline. Hey, it works for Kirk and Spock!

It's probably Kirk and Spock's fault that Pan Am went bankrupt before 2001!"I hate temporal mechanics!" Now ORBITAL mechanics, that's different. One thing 2001 got right -- the station is STILL not complete.Late to the party but congrats on the front-page.Ah, seeing how
2001: ASO is my fav film of all time, always great to see some more visioning of its themes.
Great job on the shots dude, esp. like the first one.Way funny - but how about a possible future in this very timeline?!! - Maybe this will be the most likely appearance of the ship. . . .
